Immigration reform and racism

There has been much attention paid to the immigration issue lately, and it has effectively split the formerly solid Republican coalition of Southern whites and Corporations. The southern whites are racist (to call a spade a spade) so they oppose anything that legalizes undocumented aliens. (If you don’t believe southern whites are generally bigots, ask an African-American. Or pop into Jena, LA). Nixon's "Southern Strategy" was a clever, if incredibly cynical play for white southern voters. Signing the Civil Rights act, LBJ famously said of Democrats, "We've lost South for a generation." Looks like two to me. The Corporations need a stream of hard-working people to slay chickens and perform other nasty tasks that Americans won't do. Thus the schism.

A few thoughts:

* When my Dad's family got to the new world in the early 17th century, there was no immigration service. When my Mom's family came in the 19th century, they were checked for TB and let in. The current process for getting to America is ridiculously complex and punitive. Would my ancestor have made it in? Would yours?

* We have a problem with Social Security because too many retirees will be supported by too few workers. Solution? 20 million new Social Security cards and Voila! Problem solved.

* Many of the strongest opponents to undocumented aliens would appear to be Evangelical Christians. Were the words in red missing from your Bibles? There are probably no more devout Christian, family oriented people in the world as Latin-Americans. Natural allies.

* "What part of ILLEGAL immigrant don't you understand?" I love this one. Christian prayer in public schools is illegal. Does that make it wrong? Abortion is legal. Does that make it right?

* "Why are they flying Mexican flags?" That’s so insulting to America. See graphic.

Maybe the best way to show the racism in this chunk of knuckleheads is to google "illegal alien invasion". Wooo. That's the true colors coming out.

funny, i was just thinking of you yesterday during our sunday morning sermon, there was reference back to the old testament law where beyond what you could eat and wear was clear instruction on how to not double harvest your fields so that the poor could eat, and so forth. the sermon was closed with the point that when one looks up the terms "poor" "widow" "fatherless" and "needy" in the Bible, there is ALOT about how we are to take care of them because God loves them.
it is really sad that alot (but not all) of the current day church has not understood this God they claim to do things in the name of, while clearly NOT doing exactly what He did tell us to do,
hence stupid endless debates about immigration and health care, what is so threatening about people who need alittle mercy?, and in a lot of cases like immigration, would actually be a plus to our society, not a burden,
anyway just my mini rant

you don't even want to get me started on the whole immigration thing! i just had this fight with someone recently, at a party, and this person was appalled to hear that my plan for "immigration reform" involved opening the borders and letting as many people as we have jobs for come into the country from wherever. i've lived along the mexican border, and never seen "illegal" workers do anything but work hard to support their families, and never been treated by them with anything but respect.
i'm sure my drunken irish, scottish ancestors wouldn't have made the cut if they were subjected to the same ill-conceived policies we practice today.

Today versus the Good ole Days

In the good ole days (prior to 1940) Government infrastucture and people employed by Government was VERY Small.

The new immigrants would fend for them selves with few government service to support them. The sad part of this is being an immigrant in the 1880s and before was a very dangerous life.

Today, when immigrants move into a big ciy there are lots of Government services that need to expand in order to support this increase in population. The schools need more teachers, the schools need teachers who can help children who don't speak english, there are some bad people who come across our borders and the need for police officers increases. New immigrants need medical services and usually don't arrive to our shores with major medical. None of these services were available to immigrants when our great and great-great grand parents came to the USA.

The big cities in States begin to require more Cash subsidies from other Cities in a State to support the expansion of Government services. So, small towns see less money from the state and the big cities get more and more of the tax payers money. So you can increase the population to reduce the Social Security problem and you increase the Public pension employee obilgation problem.

The expansion of government services means more Government employees are needed. The average Government employee makes a lot more than the average private employee (please consider pension, life time healthcare, days off). The Nation, the States and the Cities end up with much higher long term liabilities for this expansion of government employees including: increased pension obligations, increase long term health care obligations, and increased long term capital obligations to support the build out of schools and other buildings.

Unbridled immigration provides cheap labor for landscape companies, restaurants, and low cost factory employees. Immigration brings many wonderful people to our county who help drive the economy. But, doesn't unbridled immigration drive the need for Government services and ultimately create more long term liabilities for the USA.

Ultimately the Middle class (and below) and below pay a higher price. In the 1985 a college kid could clean the offices of Digital Computer and make $15 per hour (in 1985 dollars). These types of extras jobs that help support the lower (especially during periods of unemployment) and middle class have vanished and taxes increase to support the expansion of government employees.

The moral of the story make sure you are a Government Employee or a former retired High Tech Executive.

That’s a very logical, well-thought out position, William, and I’m sure it is consistent with your economic and political beliefs. They are certainly not mine. I still maintain that your position is classist, if not racist. It’s the poor middle-class (“pssst- he’s talking about us constantly oppressed white guys”) that’s bearing the burden, and them beaners is just coming here for the welfare, medical care and education.

Just google “illegal immigrant invasion” and tell me if there’s a blatant racist screed in 95% of them or not.

I’ve employed illegals, I’ve visited their families in Nicaragua, and for my money, in spite of Lou Dobbs or amyone else they are some of the nicest, most honest, hard-working people I’ve ever met, and as difficult as it is for them to come make money to send to their families I’d be proud to have them as fellow citizens and have their labor taxed.

How were the undocumented aliens you know?

I'm not a fan of Lou Dodds and I don't believe my position is racist.

My family became friends with a great lady from Brazil. She was bright, articulate, and a loving person.

I don't think the white guys are being oppressed. More often than not its a educated white guy or gal that ends up with the government job when head count is added at City or State or Federal agency.

I think it is the Immigrant that often ends being oppressed or underpaid. Take the case of friends in a Swanky section of Houston. They like all their friends in a very upscale development have found an nice lady from Mexico to be the Nanny, Maid, and cook. They were paying her $11.00 per hour. I'm sure there was no major medical (City of Houston provides that). Isn't the City of Houston is subsidizing the Nanny-Chef-Maid for my friends.

If these friends hired a legal worker - they would have to pay a higher hourly rate . There is FICA ( 15% for employer and employee portion), Medicare tax 3-5%, State Unemployment taxes, 15% for Federal Income Taxes, Medical insurance and state unemployment taxes. So, aren't my friends under paying/taking-advantage of the immigrant.

We agree to disagree.

Best Regards,
B

B, your friends are not underpaying her compared to what she could make in Chiapas or Tabasco or Oaxaca. And that's why they'll keep coming.

Thanks for your thoughtful comments. We do indeed agree to disagree.

I recently had a conversation with someone who said among their various arguments against latin immigration, "They bring deadly strain of diseases."

I told him that was no different from attempts to keep out the filthy disease-ridden wily Irish over a century ago.

Good call on the St. Patrick's Day flags.

This die-hard conservative was also outraged that a Wal-Mart visited by a friend of a friend had many signs and labels in Spanish.

I asked, is this not a seller responding to market forces? If the customer speaks Spanish, what could be more free market?

At the airport in Frankfurt, Germany, the signs are all in English and German. Filthy yank swine!
