Maybe it’s different from when I was coming up, but one of the key features in the lifestyle of Evangelicals was abstaining from alcohol. I remember the little plastic shot glasses of Welch’s grape juice and cubes of Wonder Bread for Communion. Even at that age, I couldn’t figure out why none of the people in the church drank beer, but all the neighbors did.
If drinking was so bad, why did JC actually produce the stuff miraculously? Once again, the disconnect from these people’s practices and the alleged source of them could hardly be farther apart.
