Al Qaeda in Mesopotamia

The CBS Evening News showed McCain saying, "I have news for Senator Obama. Al Qaeda is in Iraq. And that's why we're fighting in Iraq, and that's why we're succeeding in Iraq." Obama was shown saying, "I have some news for John McCain, and that is there was no such thing as al Qaeda in Iraq until George Bush and John McCain decided to invade Iraq."

How many Americans still buy the ridiculous idea that Saddam Hussein launched the attacks on 9/11? What the hell is wrong with these people? There's no way McCain believes what he's saying here, but he knows his base loves it.

John McCain: former war hero, former POW, former Maverick, current assclown. Very sad.

It’s falling apart as you read this

The destruction going on in international financial markets these days are awesome and will be the source of study by historians for at least centuries. What happens when you deregulate financial markets, and count on the magic of the free market to make things right? What happens when thousands of brainiacs get access to billions in assets and trillions in loans to play with as they wish with practically zero visibility into their dealings? What happens when banks and pension funds start buying into this madness.

The Great Unraveling. Happening now in global markets, and coming to a job (or lack of one), house (or lack of one) or bank (or lack of one near you, it’s the Great Unraveling.

Here’s a key problem- people playing with OPM (other people’s money) generally have on HUGE carrot and one TINY stick at work as they invest and try to make money.

Get this- they generally get 20% of the upside profits, but pay zero on customer losses. In running a typical $300 million portion of a hedge fund, the guru in charge would rationally make this call with your money; heads or tails. Heads he makes $60 million, and the others make $240 million or tails, you lose every penny and he loses nothing. Worse, he often could borrow 10 times his actual cash, so he’d make $600 million on the heads/tails thing if he wins. Unfortunately, if he loses, it’s now a $3 billion (with a B) loss, and 90% of it is from the pensioners and customers of banks that were told this was all safe.

Under those circumstances, if you were the hedgie, what would you do? Why should rational people pay 2% on capital and 20% on profits when it creates what no one wants done with their money.

A coin toss.

Now it’s all coming apart. You heard it hear first (almost). Citibank will be the first victim of the Great Unraveling and seek government assistance or bankruptcy protection. The fun is just starting.

This is my point, but I didn't write it

Dear Dr. Laura ...
Dear Dr. Laura,

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and I try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind him that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate.

I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the specific laws and how to best follow them.

1. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord (Lev. 1:9). The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness (Lev. 15:19-24). The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

4. Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?

5. I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?

6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination (Lev. 11:10), it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this?

7. Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?

8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev.19:27. How should they die?

9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread. (cotton/polyester blend) He also tends to curse and blaspheme alot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? (Lev.24:10-16) Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help.

Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.

Your devoted disciple and adoring fan.

Fun with Christians

So I'm walking around at the local annual Chili Cook Off, just your average normal Florida Keys everybody walking around with a Budweiser draft at 10:30 on a Sunday morning (God, I love this town) kind of place when I notice the Gideons booth on the midway. Inside are 3 eager souls, one in his fifties, one in her sixties and one in his seventies. In the other booths there are people selling homemade salsa and chile mixes and candles and incense and beer and chili (duh) and all the tan, wrinkled, tatooed locals sort of drift around in t-shirts and Hook&Tackle beercan shorts, many with actual beer cans in that pocket and say, "Hey" to the guy they fished with or went to grade school with or fought at the Caribbean Club last weekend or whatever, and they're all making sort of a wide turn around the Gideons.

Anyway, I go by a few times, and the Gideons have got their winningest smiles on, like my Yellow Lab wears when she just wants one taste, honest to Dog just one bite of that steak and I'll never ask again. So I saunter over.

"Hi."

"Hi."

They seem genuinely thrilled that an interested citizen has decided to sidle on up and get to hear the good news.

"Um, you guys are Christians, right?"

Heads bobbing, I get a simultaneous triple response that sounds something like "YesSirForCertainUhHuh."

“So, if I understand it, you follow the words of Christ, and oppose abortion, Gay marriage and support the death penalty, right?"

They seem so happy that I've nailed it, like I got a surprising A on a pop quiz. "That would be us, son." (Actual words. Word.)

"Could you show me in that Bible there where Christ states his opposition to abortion, homosexuality and life imprisonment vs. a death penalty?"

They leap for their Bibles, like we did when we had "Sword drills" when I was a kid in Evangelical churches. Honest to Dog, a roomful of kids sits in an auditorium with Bibles in their laps and the Preacher on stage calls out a Bible verse. The winning child is the first one to find the Book, Chapter and Verse and stand up and read it out loud. Prizes like a paperback New Testament were offered to the winner of the most rounds. Um, isn't that by definition the person who needs it least?

Anyway, they figure out pretty soon that this stuff is mostly forbidden in Leviticus, rather than by Jesus, and they migrate to the Old Testament. “Wait a minute”, I ask. “Are you Revelationary Leviticans or Christians? Shouldn’t your primary issues and articles of faith get at least a passing mention from the Big Guy?”

They glance at each other and realize that this isn’t going how they expected. “Every word of scripture is sacred and perfect,” they agree.

“Um, how about Leviticus 19:19?”

They are clearly non-plussed. I suppose it’s possible that most evangelizer wannabes never get to talk to the opposition that knows their doctrine.

Passage Leviticus 19:19:
19Ye shall keep my statutes. Thou shalt not let thy cattle gender with a diverse kind: thou shalt not sow thy field with mingled seed: neither shall a garment mingled of linen and woollen come upon thee.

“So, you think that you can prove that your polo shirt isn’t a cotton poly blend? Hellfire could stand in the balance!”

[snip a few details]

Anyway, eventually, the sixties something woman is stunned into silence when asked “If we are made in God’s image, did Adam and Eve have belly buttons?” Honestly, it was like shooting fish in a barrel. Then came my favorite moment; the woman says, “We’re not trained in theology. Maybe you’d like to speak with our minister?”

I tell her briefly the amusing tale of how I was thrown out of church the last time I went for quoting the actual Bible. I tell her that I don’t think the minister would appreciate them guiding me to him. She says tentatively, “I don’t think he’d mind.”

She looks to the seventy something who is shaking his head, and says, “Yes he would.”

I had a Bud and a bowl of chili and went home.

Microsoft vs. Apple

The argument used to be IBM vs. Apple, but Microsoft so swiftly and sweetly screwed IBM, the Microsoft in it's day, out of the very PC market it (IBM) invented. I was in the thick of the fight from 1984 to the early 90's when us Mac fanatics became resigned to number 2. It still escapes me why the superior products didn't win in the marketplace. Maybe if it had been a free market. Microsoft then went on to be the thieving, johnny come lately "innovation thru theft of intellectual property" bullies that they are today. Spend 10 minutes with the new Windows Vista operating system and try to keep the image of Bill Gates burning at the stake out of your head.

It can't be done.

I spent the last year or so trying to get a Palm with Windows Mobile to work. Just as a phone, even, it just sucks. My fingers are too big to hit the buttons or read the letters and numbers. When you put it to your ear, it assumes you are using the touch screen to enter data, so after call unwinding of whatever you accidentally unleash is another annoying waste of time. I fully am incapable of answering it when it's right in my hand and ringing fully 50% of the time.

Yesterday, I got an iPhone. OMG. Everything does what it says it does and more. I was using it EASILY in 30 seconds. Switching carriers was painless and simple. It's a vastly better phone than my last one, a vastly superior web browsing device, even a wildly better video player than my Nintendo DS.

What a fantastic product. I just might start carrying a cell phone again.

It's just too wonderful

With Rush, Ann, Sean, Michael and all the rest attacking McCain, the reality is just to frickin' great for words. The mighty right wing radio talk show meme, that vast right wing conspiracy is being hoist by its own petard. To wit:

Oh, those Young Republicans: ‘Talk radio is inflammatory, divisive’
Wednesday, February 6, 2008, 03:38 PM
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Things were moving too fast on Tuesday to make mention of it, but the Georgia Young Republicans have picked a fight with the likes of Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Laura Ingraham over their denunciation of emerging Republican nominee John McCain.

“It’s hard enough to reunite after a tough primary process,” said Jason Shepherd, chairman of the Georgia Federation of Young Republican Clubs. “They talk into a microphone or TV camera with no consequences and it is us activists that must pay the price as we fight for our candidates precinct by precinct.”

While specifically excluding local talk artist Neal Boortz, the group’s board of directors issued a resolution that “condemns and denounces the actions and speech over the past several weeks by Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Ann Coulter, Laura Ingraham, and others for breeding contempt, disunity and hatred among the Republican Party in order to bolster their own careers.”

Read the entire collection of whereases and therefores on the jump.

Whereas: Political Pundits like Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, Laura Ingraham, and Ann Coulter, along with other talk show hosts in national and local markets, have viciously attacked Republican candidates running in the primary election; and

Whereas: Many of these same pundits have used their shows and their vast audiences to spread disunity among Republicans when we need to be uniting to face the greater threat to our national security and well being that is embodied in the Democrat candidates for President; and

Whereas: Despite all of these pundits invoking the greatness of Ronald Reagan, none of them have paused for a second to remember Reagan’s 11th Commandment; and

Whereas: Each of the above named have, through their actions and words, lost the confidence of millions of their fans and Republican voters; and

Whereas: The members of the Georgia Federation of Young Republican Clubs are prepared to support our nominee, whether he is Mike Huckabee, John McCain, Ron Paul or Mitt Romney, against the real threat, the Democrat nominee; now

Therefore, be it resolved, this 5th Day of February, 2008, that the Georgia Federation of Young Republican Clubs strongly condemns and denounces the actions and speech over the past several weeks by Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, Ann Coulter, Laura Ingraham, and others for breeding contempt, disunity and hatred among the Republican Party in order to bolster their own careers; and

Therefore, be it FURTHER resolved, that the Georgia Federation of Young Republican Clubs praises talk show hosts like Neal Boortz, who, despite making their preference known, have chosen not to make it their mission to tear down other GOP candidates.

That was fun

When I heard that Mitt Romney was dropping out of the race, I immediately dialed in my local ditto-head channel to see what the thrice divorced drug addict had to say. Rush has been trashing McCain for his alleged "liberal" views and actions, so what would he do if McCain was the only option?

He's still beating them up! The Republicans can't win without their maniacal crazies, so there's a sudden dash of hope in the air!

Obama/Richardson '08!!!

Is anyone paying attention?

Right there on the front page of today's New York Times is all the news I need to know about the GWOT. These dumb asses in the Administration took away our rights, sodomized the Constitution, tortured in our names, and basically pissed the whole world off at us to keep us safe.

NYT-WASHINGTON- (Headline) Intelligence Chief Says Al Qaeda Improves Ability to Strike in US

(Body) Al Qaeda is gaining in strength from its refuge in Pakistan and is steadily improving its ability to recruit, train and position operatives capable of carrying out attacks inside the US, the Director of National Intelligence told a Senate panel on Tuesday.

WHAT!!! An underplanned war in Iraq, and an underequipped war in Afghanistan have left Al Qaeda more able to hit us. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE!!!

Honest to God, whne you think of the alternative uses we could have had with the lost trillion dollars it makes me literally sick to my stomach.
